Humour And The Misfortune Of Others

At last the long wait is over, Hollie Smith is back and ready to release her second studio album Humour and the misfortune of others on 15th March 2010.
Humour and the misfortune of others is a musical endeavour through which Smiths sultry voice guides the listener across an eclectic sound-scape of emotion, incorporating elements of soul, funk, blues and psychedelia.
Over her two year hiatus since the release of her highly acclaimed debut album Long Player, Hollie Smith redirected her attention to herself rather than the outside world, letting personal emotions and experiences of love, loss and hope trickle from pen to paper into the heart of her songs.
A lot of the messages are a lot more obvious than I might normally do as I tend to keep things personal or private. A lot of them will make sense but again, like in a lot of my song writing you can kind of take from them what you want says Smith.
The cathartic musical experience of Humour and the misfortune of others occurred at Waiuku's Revolver Studios under the guidance of Wellington multi instrumentalist and producer Rikki Gooch. The album was largely recorded live with minimal takes due to a strong bond between Gooch, engineer Brent Stanton, Smith and the prowess of Smiths band members, Darren Mathiassen (drums), Tyson Smith (guitar) and Creete Haami (bass). This bond is demonstrated on songs Finding Home and Will You Be The One which required no editing during the final cut.
The first single Mamma was release to radio in early February and reminds audiences of Smiths signature style of music: a battle between soul and funk entwining the electricity of Smiths spine tingling powerful voice with soulful gospel with thick basslines.

Hollie holds the rights to her first EP... so its up to her :)
When the MP3's become available for the new album you'll be able to listen to 30 seconds samples of every track, due to contractual obligations we can't have the entire track available for play
we've been enjoying listening to it this week
Posted by Mr Editor 11.12AM, 11 Mar 2010Thanks Simon! I'll be back on Mon to buy. :-) Thanks alot.
Meanwhile someone should be lobbying the right people to make Hollie's first EP available on mp3 downlaod again. I was lucky enough to get a cd of it fairly cheaply, but those cds are fetching crazy money now. It would be best for all Hollie Smith fans if they (or the Conscious Roots cds that some of the songs are included on) were available as downloads through amplifier and through the big international dealers like itunes and amazon. It would be so easy to do now since amazon has an attractive and easy package even for smaller artists to release their work as downloads, but someone as "big" as Hollie Smith should be international by now anyway. Such a shame about all that record label nonsense she had to go through.
Hollie's myspace and website are still not updated so hopefully we can rely on amplifier to have snippet album samples after the release date so that bloggers can direct interesting parties to have a sample listen....

Hollie's album will be available via us in MP3 format - it will become available for purchase/download on the 15th (next Monday) when the CD is released.
Posted by Mr Editor 8.57AM, 10 Mar 2010Apologies Simon! Didn't realise you had that. When you search smoke for Hollie Smith it brings them all up so I remembered that one....
Do you know whether Hollie Smith's new album will be released to mp3 on amplifier or whether it's cdc only? I ask because the last album I purchased the mp3s from you and I wonder whether I need to pre-order the cd now or whether it will be available on mp3. I'm in the UK so I' grateful to you site for allowing me to access Hollie's music.
