Mark Laurent
A 28-year-old Auckland singer/songwriter/ guitarist with a message. Like the better- known Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Bruce Cockburn's message, it's a Christian one. And like Dylan's it's overt.
The music - recorded in Auckland's Mandrill Studios - is often great stuff. It ranges through near-acoustic pieces to rock. Laurent has a warm attractive voice, a great sense of melody and - best of all - he's an impressive guitarist. His back-up players acquit themselves well, the sound is deep and sharp all in one and there are some strong songs in here - plus the message, of course. Recommended...
