Bruce Morley - An Obituary
On 22 November, kiwi drummer and writer Bruce Morley passed away after a long battle with cancer.
From the age of 21 in the early 1960s, Bruce worked as a freelance drummer, playing mainly in show business, country, theatre and jazz.
During that time he backed performers including Spike Milligan, Cilla Black, Cleo Laine, Tony Christie and John Farnham.
Bruce also played with numerous musical groups including the Dominion Centenary Concert Band, the Prohibition Big Band, Kokomo and the Vitamin S Free Improvisation Collective, as well as in the Bruce Morley Sextet and Bruce Morley's Little Big Band.
As if that weren't enough, Bruce helped cobble together the first issue of NZ Musician Magazine in September 1988, before becaming an ongoing contributor to the publication for the rest of his life.
There are plans for Bruce Morley to be farewelled today (Tuesday 27 November) at the Parnell Tennis Club.
