New Zealander Louis Baker Heads To Red Bull Music Academy
After several months of listening to and reading applications from producers, instrumentalists and vocalists from 96 countries, Red Bull Music Academy is proud to announce Louis Baker as the participant to represent New Zealand.
Louis Baker will join 59 other diverse artists from around the globe to attend the 15th anniversary and the 2012 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in New York which runs from September 30 to November 2 this year.
Baker has earned himself a unique opportunity to meet legendary artists, producers and industry revolutionaries from across music history, as they take a seat on the lecture couch to share anecdotes, knowledge and experience. When he joins the first term at the Academy (September 30 to October 12), he'll have the chance to collaborate in custom-built recording studios with his peers from 33 other countries, representing diverse cities from Tallinn to Lagos to Vienna.
Each year the Academy invites artists worldwide to apply, asking them to fill out a detailed and in depth questionnaire and submit a selection of their tunes. Since music has a way of constantly transforming itself (often in the most unexpected locales), each year's application process is a journey of musical discovery for the jury. We strongly believe that Louis has a unique vision, as well as the motivation to see that vision through.
Louis Baker, Wellington
With an astute eye for lyrical detail, a rich vocal tone that harks back to classic Motown-era soul and a direct and expressive guitar style, Wellington-based singer and songwriter Louis Baker is one of the most promising new talents to emerge from New Zealand in recent years. Prizing the intimacy and immediacy of performing solo with his guitar, Louis sings openly and honestly about his life. For a young man, he's completely comfortable exploring the big themes while keeping the energy and interaction front and centre for his audience. Alongside his live performance schedule, Louis is busying himself in the studio; working on his debut EP, preparing new material for a series of anticipated festival performances, and collaborating on new projects. Louis is also playing support in the coming weeks for Fat Freddy's Drop and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.
