Coco Solid Hints At The Content Of Badd Energy's New Album

The next album from Badd Energy, entitled Underwater Pyramids, is due for release next year. Flying Nun Records recently announced Badd Energy's signing to the iconic label.

MC Coco Solid (Jess Hansell to her mum) explained to bFM that a lot of the material on the new album is about "the more cosmic things in life", as the title suggests.

"We heard about the underwater pyramids that were discovered off the coast of Japan... it's this big mystery... I love that shit", she says.

Coco Solid says the unexplained pyramids became a "mission statement" for the record.

The band's genre-bending sound - a certain futuristic kind of psychedelic electronica - might seem something of a shift in style for the iconic 'Dunedin Sound' label, but Coco Solid says the label is staying loyal to its old "DIY philosophy" while still moving in new directions.

After working as an independent artist for a long time, Coco Solid released an album as Parallel Dance Ensemble through the German label Permanent Vacation earlier this year. That experience was positive, meaning she "wasn't traumatised by the idea of labels anymore."

And she says Flying Nun gives bands the breathing room to do what they like.
