Otago Student Pres. Changes Mind About Dunedin's Radio One

Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) president Logan Edgar has indicated he no longer supports the sale of student radio station Radio One 91FM.

The sale of the station was one of the recommendations made during a financial review of OUSA last month.

OUSA believes it will not be able to fund many of its services, including the running of the station, if the Act Party's Voluntary Student Membership (VSM) legislation is eventually introduced as expected.

Comments made by Edgar on Facebook after the announcement of the potential sale seemed to indicate he supported the decision.
He wrote, "the bottom line is that not enough of my students listen to the station because of what it is, and it's bullshit that radio one has received the funding (a v large amount of student money) for as long as it has while only being relevant to a hand-full of Scarfies."

But speaking to 95bFM this week, Edgar said he was "still forming an opinion" on the issue when he made the comments on Facebook, and he now thinks he has changed his mind.

Edgar admitted, "I still don't think it's relevant to a whole lot more than a handful of Scarfies."

However he also acknowledged the importance of the station to a wider listenership including former students, and said the station is "definitely something we would want to hang on to if we could."

Edgar locked himself outside in a cage for two nights this week in protest at the VSM bill.

VSM legislation is currently being held up in parliament, but student associations around the country are predicting massive cuts to their services if it is passed into law.
