vinyl is the best. CD is a compromise but still not bad. MP3 is a why bother. one can always convert and album or cd to mp3 if abaolutely necessary for an iPod or the like.

It's not so easy to convert to MP3 from vinyl though (it's sooo time consuming). Most of my music collection is on platters and I still haven't managed to convert any of it to digital. Thankfully I'm paranoid about hearing damage so only rarely use an iPod.

If we're talking about digital formats, I'd prefer mp3 due to it's high compatibility.

Digital Formats - AAC Lossless (256kbps ACC is the same as 320kbps MP3) and the added value is that it's smaller in file size.

There are different softwares that encode songs to MP3 and all these are able to do this and have different quality output.

Vinyl is the equivalent to Hi8 tapes vs. Digital Hi8 (for example) Hi8 is just softer to view as is Vinyl is to the ears.

My thing is this. If it sounds good and high quality, then it's ok with me. I prefer mp3, but I also tolerate wma, wav, etc.

Prefer vinyl and then CD. Will never buy MP3, it is a compressed format where parts of the information are thrown away to give a small file size which results in reduced audio quality. Hardly necessary to compress music these days with storage being cheap. Superior uncompressed formats such as FLAC provide far better audio quality and FLAC is an open standard. I won't be buying digital downloads from Amplifier until they offer them in FLAC.
