I was a pre-order customer on Shadow Light. I looked forward to this work after the wonderful energy and care on Black Brown and White and earlier.
So I was very disappointed to hear what Shadow Light has turned out to be.
Posted by David Whyte 10.26AM, 3 May 2013I put it on while driving to NaeNae and found I was on the 4th track before it sunk in it was track 4.
This is to say, that the album seems to me, to have been so over mixed and synthesized, that the developing technical musicianship, spirit and energy of this band has been eroded, dumbed down and mostly lost.
The tracks are all pretty much the same, the baselines and odd punch of percussion to horns and lead guitar, seem to be killed off enough so as to be hardly noticeable amid the overworked slickness of the mixing suite.
Basically, this is an album that seems to try too hard to be clever and for me, is so boring I have given it away after 2 full runs because the essence of the early work which attracted me to the sound (even if the early lyrics were primitive such as with Casually Acquainted, but this was all learning and had the hooks so cool as).
So sorry to see such raw talents, spirit and punchy horns / rhythm section and percussion, be smoothed over so easily, as to be indistinct from anything else.
Yes there seems to be an improvement in accent on overall elements of each musical section, but as above, the punchy, individual and lively character of this band, seems to have been lost in translation.
Hope they swing back next time.
Black Brown and White is, im my opinion an outstanding album. Its a well balanced album. Skank a bit, grove a bit and chill to some of the beatiful slower songs. Im struggling to pick a stand out sond as they are all excellent in their own right but i would have to say that the re-working of Crisis Situation from their first album is clever and sounds amazing. Sophies Lullaby would be hard to gloss over...it will give you a shiver down your spine in a good way. Saw the live show in Tauranga which was cool, my only gripe is i wish that bands would release their albums before they tour so we know what we are singing and bopping along to, but hey, thats just personal preference. Great job Tahuna Break, thoroughly impressive and definately one of my favourites over the last few years. Catch you again over summer I hope!
