Mahoney Harris

Mahoney (pronounced Marnie) bought her first guitar from a New York City pawn shop in the summer of 1996. After several lessons she started writing songs and performing at open mic nights around the city.

In 1999 Mahoney recorded her first EP, Nowhere To Roam, in a basement in Tamarama, Sydney with friend Dean Manning (Leonardo's Bride, Holidays On Ice).

Tiring of the urban grind of NY, Mahoney relocated to Sydney in 2000 and toured the East Coast as support for Leonardo's Bride. She continued to gig and recorded the album, Here For Now.

The following years saw Mahoney travel to Asia, Europe and North Africa and back to NY where so recorded three unreleased songs with producer Andrew Wyatt (The A.M, Fires Of Rome). Mahoney enlisted guitarist friend Michael Tighe and drummer Matt Johnson (The Jeff Buckley Band) to play on several tracks.

She then returned to her native New Zealand where she completed a BA in English, opened a vintage homeware store (her other passion) and gave birth to her son, Nico.

Returning to music in 2005, Mahoney joined the band River's Edge, playing acoustic guitar and providing backing vocals on both albums, River's Edge and Cambridgetown.

Her new EP, But They Do is a selection of intimate, wistful but hopeful tunes. Some possess a country flavour while others are more folk. Her voice has at once a maturity and a childlike quality.

Mahoney is attracted to emotional and spiritual crossroads; points of transition that make way for new revelations and possibilities. Nature is an ever present influence and often the backdrop in Mahoney's songs.

Tom Healy (The Low Spark, Hannah Curwood) recorded and produced the e.p. in his Kingsland studio. Mahoney enlisted musicians such as Wayne Bell (the Bads, The Darlings, The Calico Brothers) who cameos on banjo, Billy Squire (Salon Kingsadore, Billy Squire and the Rye) on piano and slide guitar and Paul Taylor (Garageland, Rivers Edge) on drums.

E.P. release date: Thurs Oct 8th, The Wine Cellar, 8PM
