Allison Durbin was born in Auckland and like her six brothers and sisters began singing in Uncle Tom's Friendly Road Children's Choir as soon as she reached 5 years of age. Allison's first foray into the competitive world of showbiz came whilst the family was on holiday at the Waihi Beach Resort and Allison decided to enter the a talent quest. She was ten at the time and came second.
Her professional career started at the age of 13, when she and a girlfriend attended an afternoon dance. It was at a place called the Shiralee Club abd featured the Quintiki Showband. Their leader asked if anyone in the crowd would like to sing; Allison got up and sang 3 numbers. The manager was so impressed she became the resident female vocalist and Eldrid Stebbing signed her to Zodiac Records.
By age 17 Allison was singing in Sydney, Australia with the Mike Perjanik Show Group. Allison signed to EMI Records in 1968 with her first single 'I Have Loved Me A Man' becoming a huge number 1 hit. Allison was New Zealand Entertainer of the Year in 1969 and achieved three Australian Best Femail Artist awards in 1969, 70 and 71.
