Release Of The Day:
NZ Trio - Flourishes
Flourishes is the third album by one of NZ's most accomplished classical groups, NZ Trio.
Playing with the boundaries of contemporary chamber music, NZ Trio brings its much-heralded blend of contrasting works to its new album, which provides a snapshot of the type of programme the group loves to perform live.
Recent NZ Trio commissions by Wayne Yudane and Eve de Castro Robinson are very much at home among the masterworks of Mozart & Ravel, with Arvo Part's lovely take on a Mozart Adagio in the middle, forming what the trio calls a "fascinating and unexpected mix".
Te Reo Maori
Whirimako Black - Whirimako Black Sings ( Te Reo Version)
This version of Whirimako Black Sings contains 10 tracks, all in te reo Maori and recorded at the same sessions at York Street Studios as the bi-lingual version.
This alternative version of the album is for all those who want to experience the full beauty of the Maori language ... whether for academic or language study purposes or purely for enjoyment, this recording captures the pure magic of Whirimako Black singing in her first language!
Various - Tatou Tatou E
With sounds of organic reggae, urban soul and electronic elements, Kog Studio and a selection of Aotearoa artists present their original te reo Maori waiata over the beats of Chong Nee on Tatou Tatou E.
Tauhine - Ma Te Reo
Ma Te Reo comprises 24 tracks - 12 waiata linked by spoken word stories, prayer, ad lib songs and dialogue. Tauhine also mix reggae with soul and rock, bringing in an array of guest musicians to compliment their strong family vocals.
The album is dedicated to Mihi Ki Te Kapua, a prolific Tuhoe tribal composer of the 1800's. It is also a memorial to Brian Hemmingsen, Erina and Jackies father who passed away in 2001.
Upper Hutt Posse - Tohe
TOHE is a ten song Dubstep/Drum&Bass album from Aotearoa Rap pioneers Upper Hutt Posse. Produced by Kia Kaha Productions with financial assistance from Te Māngai Pāho.
Music sequencing by Te Kupu, Kiki Marama & MC Wiya with additional input from Koru, the beats are typically varied and the lyrics focus on Indigenous resistance and Tino Rangatiratanga (Māori sovereignty).
Mana Motuhake (self-determination) illustrates this most aptly and title track Tohe (persist) kicks off the album encapsulating the vigorous pace which lets up only a little on the ethereal Hineahuone (earth mother) and the downtempo dubstep of Mōhio (know) which closes the album.
Implanting assertive socio-political perspectives TOHE breaks new ground in Dubstep/Drum&Bass with it's extensive use of Māori lyrics. It's a testament of UHP's versatility, musicality and unique character which sees them embrace and then reshape musical genres into their own style.
Vocals are a family affair with brothers Te Kupu & MC Wiya on lead, and Te Kupu's 16 yr old daughter Ātaahua sweetening the vibes with backing vocals on six songs.
Homefire Burning - Nga Kaitiaki O Te Ahi Kaa
Acknowledging the traditional Maori concept of the ahi kaa or home fire, the band members embrace their role as mana whenua, the keepers of the flame, and invite all people to join them in stoking that fire to burn strong with the illumination of peace, knowledge and understanding philosophy.
They hope this message will inspire people to rise up against oppression, to make a difference, think freely, and most importantly respect everyone. Homefire burning are part of the new generation of freedom fighters ready to make a difference in our daily lives.
