Chart Attack

Chart Attack

25.11.09

I've got nothing against the Foo Fighters, Michael Jackson or Them Crooked Vultures but I must say I'm really pleased Shapeshifter denied all the top spot in this weeks chart - why? Because they bloody well deserve it and they come from here.

Gin Wigmore slips a spot to land at number 4 this week, which shouldn't concern her nor her handlers, five weeks in the top five albums for a debut album should have them all smiling still.

Back at number six is the ever popular elder statesman of local music Dave Dobbyn with Beside You.

Another bloody great result is the tribute/benefit album for Chris Knox debuting at number eight this week which will be very gratifying for the Knox family and everyone involved in the project.

Carl Doy is sitting at number twenty this week, a drop from ten last week.

Hayley Westernra's Christmas album debuts at number twenty eight. Is it just me that thinks Hayley should have had a good few albums under her belt before she jumped into the somewhat crass christmas market... Sure her voice may suit the songs she includes on the album, it just seems a little early in her career, after all she is only 22, plenty of years before the need for a christmas album surely...

Ladyhawke continues her chart run post the Tui's and this week is at 28, just behind her comes Fat Freddy's at 31.

Another debut this week is Three Houses Down's Break Out and the final entries in the album chart this week comes from Flight Of The Conchords at 37 and Midnight Youth are lucky last at 40.

Perhaps it's the time of year but the singles chart is virtually devoid of green with only three locals appearing this week; Gin Wigmore at 14, Kidz In Space at 21 and J Williams at 33.

The Great NZ Songbook is at number five this week in the compilation chart.

Release Of The Day
Hayley J. Hansell - You Are Not Who You Know

Hayley J. Hansell is driven by the maxim You Are Not Who You Know. From crate digging to record store retail, audio engineering to radio, Hayley J. has gone it alone from day one, taking her time to hone musical skills that form like Voltron on her debut EP.

You Are Not Who You Know cooks down the ingredients of a self-served musical education into slices of future soul, Hayley's smooth vocals teamed with jazz-infused head nods courtesy of US producers J. Rawls (Black Star, Lone Catalysts) and Usef Dinero (J-Live, Raheem DeVaughan) & hungarian producer Illegalvoice. On the local tip, Luke B. (aka DJ Orphan) chips in on beat duties and Coco Solid delivers a trademark chutzpah-heavy verse on the EP's title track.

Have a good one
