Point That Thing Somewhere Else

Point That Thing Somewhere Else

07.09.09

I grew up listening to the music of The Clean, they were one of my first introductions to local music and after over two decades of listening to them they still sound great to my ears. Needless to say I'm excited about their new album and as such it is today's featured release.

Release of The Day
The Clean - Mister Pop

In 1978, The Clean were the seeds of New Zealand punk. They carved out a big sandbox for everyone to play in, and their influence resonated not only in NZ but around the world.

Mister Pop sees The Clean continue the great pop pastiche. Circus ragas ("Moonjumper"), hazy sunset anthems ("In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul"), and the loose Dada approach to word-smithery continue alongside "proper" lyrical forays and a few Autobahn-referential instro moments to boot ("Tensile").

Robert Scotts love of pastoral UK folk has brought some added weight into the overall Clean equation, as does David Kilgours Eastern and African guitar jones, though all this has always fit in withand still constitutesthe total basis of the Clean sound journey.

Welcome to the week.
