The countdown to the summer festival season heats up with the first line-up for this year Rhythm & Vines Festival being announced... now before you get too carried away with thoughts of sunshine accompanied by good music there are plenty of shows and songs to enjoy first.
One such show happens at the Auckland Town Hall this Saturday when Eru Dangerspiel will be performing. We catch up with the man behind Eru Dangerspiel Multi-instrumentalist/producer Riki Gooch to answer some questions for Amplifier.
Another online interview of note is found over at Lil Chief Records where Princess Chelsea interviews Ed Pie (Cake) whose album The Fearsome Feeling recorded under the name Pie Warmer has just been released.
This week's Release Of The Week is Rebel Peasant's The Walls of the Well.
With his little fire-brand torch, Rebel Peasant lights up The Walls of the Well - the first solo album by The Phoenix Foundation drummer Richie Singleton.
The Walls of the Well is Singleton's first album under the Rebel Peasant moniker, taking listeners on a journey into 'Experimental Other Dub' as he flexes his musical and production skills.
The 11 instrumental tracks on The Walls of the Well feature a plethora of instruments and musicians hailing from The Phoenix Foundation (the band with whom he has played with since like forever) Fat Freddy's Drop, The Black Seeds, Little Bushman, Cassette and Hikoikoi. Trumpets blend with rhodes and piano whilst melodica, accordion and guitar are given a work out over more traditional double bass, percussion and drums.
Singleton describes his musical style as 'a hearty yearning, like a rousing whiskey by the fire' - the richly layered moods shifting from dark to uplifting, held together by evocative, filmic overtones. He says a fascination with globalisation, religion and environmentalism has inspired many of the tracks on the album.
Available exclusively as MP3 download now. CD released 10.08.2009. All CD purchases will receive a free Hippo The Watersaver Bag (it goes in your toilet!)
